Joachim Szodruch graduated and obtained his doctorate (Dr.-Ing.) from the Technical University Berlin. After studies at Cambridge and NASA, he joined industry in 1981. He held various management positions at MBB, DaimlerChrysler Aerospace and Airbus Industries. He left Airbus as Vice President Future Projects and Technology in 2002 to become Member of the Executive Board of DLR (German Aerospace Centre) in Cologne. Here, he was responsible for Aeronautics research, a position he held until his retirement in 2010. From 2005 to 2009, he was also heading DLR's Energy research. In 2011, he co-founded Thelsys GmbH. As a partner, he still contributes his rich resource of knowledge and experience to the benefit of the company's customers.

Joachim Szodruch is chairman of IFAR (International Forum of Aviation Research) and President Science and Research of areg (Aviation Initiative for Renewable Energy in Germany). Joachim Szodruch is Past President of CEAS, the Council of European Aerospace Societies and was co-chair of ACARE (Advisory Council for Aeronautical Research in Europe). He is also an Associate Fellow of AIAA, the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics and a member of the Senate of the DGLR, the German Aerospace Society.
